Dimitar Berbatov sends transfer warning to Newcastle United and makes Manchester City comparison

Dimitar Berbatov has insisted it will take time for Newcastle United to attract top players to the club even if they're takeover is complete but admitted there are similarities to Manchester City.

The Magpies are in talks over a potential £300m takeover, lead by Amanda Stavely, Jamie Reuben, the Public Investment Governor which would bring an end to Mike Ashley's reign as owner.

Manchester City, of course, were subject to a takeover of their own in 2008 from Sheikh Mansour which dramatically changed the financial fortunes of the club.

However, it wasn't until 2012 that City won their first Premier League title despite heavy investment.

Berbatov signed for Manchester United ahead of their rivals despite the financial backing of City and he believes that, similarly, it will take time before top-class players see Newcastle United as a desirable destination despite their potential new fortunes.

"It is an exciting project at Newcastle but it will be a challenge to attract top players, at least at first," Berbatov told Betfair.

"If I was a player, and they were going after me, first of all I would need to evaluate my current position - where I am playing, whether I am happy with it, my financial situation.

"Some players will be tempted by money, while others will be tempted to go purely because of the new project, and some because of the manager. It's different for every player.

"Some people are drawing similarities to when Man City were taken over in 2008 and their first transfer window. There are some similarities.

"At that time, I went to United and for me it was a no-brainer because it was more about the history of the club, the players and what I could win with that team. Sometimes big money doesn't buy you success."
