Dimitar Berbatov sends strong message to Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of new season

Dimitar Berbatov has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to 'play the Manchester United way' in order to get off to the best possible start this season.

United won just ten points from their first seven games last season, making it their worst Premier League start in their history, and Jose Mourinho had lost his job before Christmas.

Solskjaer turned the club's fortunes around, but could only guide United to a sixth-place finish.

Now, Solskjaer is embarking on his first full season at United, and former striker Berbatov says he must be given time from the powers above him.

But in order to help himself, Berbatov says he cannot afford a repeat of United's slow start last season.

"Solskjaer is starting from the start with pre-season," Berbatov told the Mirror.

"He has time to prepare. After that he has no excuses. He needs to start strong because if you don't then you have all this negativity surrounding you.

"I am hopeful. Everybody who is connected to the club, all ex-players are going to be thinking this is the time for him to start playing the Man United way, better than last season. I want to see that, last season was disappointing."

Defending Solskjaer, Berbatov said the manager needs time after United have changed manager four times in the six years since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.

He continued: "I hope there is no rash decision made because this is not the Man United way to change coaches every one or two years. We're not going to see another 26 years in charge again, of course, but more time is needed.

"Not everyone is going to start the way they want. I remember sometimes we would start slowly but then things would pick up.

"So I hope, however he starts, he is given more time."
