Ex-Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has warned Pep Guardiola that Liverpool will prioritise winning the Premier League after lifting the Champions League trophy last year.
City pipped their rivals to the title last year on the final day of the season to complete a historic domestic treble, but Liverpool did end the season with a European Cup after defeating Tottenham in Madrid.
Both sides have made unbeaten starts to the new season but Berbatov feels that Liverpool will want to win the league title more than anything while Guardiola will be desperate to win the Champions League.
The Spaniard lifted the trophy at Barcelona but failed to do so with Bayern Munich or the Citizens.
Berbatov told Betfair : "The Champions League is Manchester City’s priority this season. Pep Guardiola is the best coach in the world and, having failed to win this competition during his time at Bayern Munich, he will be desperate to win it with City.
"If Guardiola blows it again, his critics will be reminding him that it’s a long time since he won it with Barcelona.
"For Liverpool, the opposite is true.
"In the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp will need to keep his players motivated. They have been so successful in this competition over the past couple of seasons that they could become complacent.
"It’s possible to think: “I won this last year, so it’s no big deal if we lose.” Liverpool want so badly to be champions of England and the Premier League will be their prime focus."
The former United man also believes that City's Premier League rivals Tottenham and Chelsea won't pose much of a threat this season.
"I can’t back last season’s finalists Spurs to repeat their heroics as consistency continues to be a problem for them. Chelsea are improving under Frank Lampard but I don’t see them as contenders for the Champions League," Berbatov added.
