Dimitar Berbatov sends Jesse Lingard Manchester United warning amid great West Ham form

Jesse Lingard's move to West ham could not have gone any better for the attacking-midfielder.

Averaging a goal or assist every 88 minutes in a Hammers shirt Lingard's form has seen him force his way back into Gareth Southgate's England plans as the Three Lions manager prepares for this summer's European Championships.

The 28-year-old has scored five and created two assists since he arrived at West Ham in January and has been a big part of helping the Hammers into fifth spot.

David Moyes would not be drawn on whether or not Lingard will remain at West Ham next season but former Manchester United and Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov thinks a permanent move would be the best course of action.

Gareth Southgate pleased with Jesse Lingard return

"Jesse Lingard is on loan at West Ham at the moment and I'm unsure of what the end of the season will bring," Berbatov told Betfair.

"It's complicated with him, I wouldn't be surprised if United gave him a chance again during the pre-season, to see if he can fit into the system and prove himself or he may want to stay at West Ham because he is doing well there, you can tell he is happy and for a player you don't want to lose that momentum and confidence.

"Honestly, if he doesn't have a place at United then I would prefer him to stay at West Ham because he is back in form and it's been a great turn around for him, that move to West Ham is the best thing that could have happened to him, he needed that chance to shine and prove that he is good enough and he has been rewarded with his chance for the national team.

"The strange thing now is if he will still find it difficult to get back into that United midfield, good players don't always fit into great teams.

"He will be pleased with his performances for England and Gareth Southgate has a lot of talented players to pick from, every manager would love to have that luxury problem. I can imagine that Lingard will be happy and will be hopeful of a place in the squad for the Euros, but he needs to keep up his performances in the last games of the season."

With nine games left in the season, West Ham sit in fifth place just two points behind Chelsea in the fourth and final Champions League spots.

Qualifying for the Champions League next season is a 'dream' for Moyes but the Scot would also be thrilled with a Europa League spot considering that just 12 months ago West ham were in the heart of a relegation battle.

Any form of European football next season is sure to make the club a more attractive proposition not just to Lingard but to any Hammers summer transfer targets. And Moyes' team return to their European quest on Monday night when they travel to Molineux to take on Wolves in teh final Premier League action of the Easter weekend.
