Dimitar Berbatov says Edinson Cavani's Man Utd situation is "not fair" as transfer looms

Dimitar Berbatov thinks Edinson Cavani’s Manchester United situation has been unfair and states his decision to leave should be an easy one.

Cavani signed for the Red Devils back in the summer of 2020 and after an impressive first season in English football, agreed to a 12-month extension.

But his second campaign has been a frustrating one, with injuries and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo limiting his opportunities.

In total, he has played just 274 minutes in all competitions, only finding the net once.

That lack of playing time has led to speculation that the veteran striker could force a move in the January transfer window.

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in the Uruguayan as they continue to search for a replacement for the retired Sergio Aguero.

Berbatov, who spent four seasons at Old Trafford, believes the arrival of Ronaldo has unfairly taken the limelight away from Cavani.

“‘Despite a good season last time out, Cavani hasn’t played enough,” Berbatov told Betfair. “When someone like Ronaldo comes into the club, he takes all the spotlight, he plays every game and in the world of football this happens.

“It’s not a fair situation because Cavani did so well for the team last season, he earned a new deal but Ronaldo has taken his place in the team. It’s not fair but this happens in football.

“If there’s a chance for Cavani to leave the club, if there is an offer from Barcelona, then of course he will be thinking about taking it to get more football, and if he will get more game time in La Liga then I will support him and say ‘go there and play, it sounds like a great deal, great money and you’re not 24 anymore.’”

After eight seasons in English football with Tottenham, United and Fulham, aged 33, Berbatov made the decision to move to a new league joining Monaco in France.

And the former forward thinks Cavani, 34, should jump at the chance of moving to Spain to play with Barcelona.

“I didn't regret it for one minute because I had a great time there,” the Bulgarian continued. “Hopefully, Cavani will have the full details about Barca, how they train, how they prepare and what they expect from him and then he will make a decision.

“Whatever it is, Barca is Barca, and when they come asking for you of course it's difficult to say no.

“With Cavani not playing at United it's an easy decision.”
