Dimitar Berbatov's verdict after Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers linked with Man Utd

Dimitar Berbatov has offered his thoughts on who should potentially be Manchester United's next manager after Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers were linked.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has remained in his post this week following the Red Devils' 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool, but speculation surrounding who may be the next man in the Old Trafford hot seat has been rife.

Berbatov, who spent four seasons at United, thinks Conte's style of management could be what the current crop of stars need, boasting the tags of serial winner and disciplinarian.

"He made Inter [Milan] champions [in 2021] and he made Chelsea champions [in 2017]," the Bulgarian wrote on Betfair .

"Conte has the record and the reputation of working hard, I heard that a lot of times. He has been to England and done it, winning the Premier League.

"He is the name that everybody is talking about at the moment and maybe some people are saying that United need this disciplinarian approach, to tell them exactly what the manager expects of you, if they're not doing it, bench."

Berbatov posed: "Maybe they need that from time to time?"

" Louis Van Gaal was similar to Conte in this way, discipline is the number one priority, but he was also successful and won the FA Cup.

"Conte has all the results and reputation behind him to know how to handle things at a big club in England. He's probably number one on their list."

Rodgers, meanwhile, has shot up in the bookmakers' odds as a candidate, having beaten the Red Devils with his Leicester City just a fortnight ago.

For now, though, Solskjaer remains in charge and is preparing to take his side to Tottenham Hotspur - another of Berbatov's old clubs - on Saturday.

Despite being critical of the current United boss, the former Spurs hitman has admitted he feels "sentiment" for Solskjaer.

"Judging on the Liverpool match, Solskjaer isn't the right man to take the club forward," Berbatov stated.

Who would be the better choice - Conte or Rodgers? Let us know your thoughts below .

"For some fans that's the most important game of the season and we want to beat Liverpool maybe more than we want to beat [Manchester] City.

"That being said, we have to look at the bigger picture and there are a lot more games to come, if they don't win the next couple of matches then Ole is going to be in major trouble."

The 40-year-old, who retired in 2019, went on to say: "Next up for United is three tough matches: Spurs away, Atalanta away and City at home.

"I obviously have a strong sentiment towards United and Solskjaer for various reasons, but I also try to be realistic and I see that if they play the same way against Spurs like they did against Liverpool then they are in trouble.

"Spurs are a side that are up and down, and it is a winnable game for United, but if they lose it the following two games become even more difficult and Solskjaer isn't going to be in a position to stay at United.

"If they don't beat Spurs, they are going to struggle in the next two games and the manager is going to be taking the blame."
