Dimitar Berbatov reveals role in Anthony Martial Manchester United transfer

Dimitar Berbatov has revealed he was consulted by his former club Manchester United as they were deliberating a move for Anthony Martial.

United completed a transfer for the former Monaco striker in August 2015, worth an initial £36million rising to more than £50million. Martial has endured an up and down time at Old Trafford, but was coming into form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just before the season was suspended due to coronavirus.

Berbatov has spoken effusively about Martial in the past and revealed United's scouts asked him his opinion on the Frenchman just before signing him.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Berbatov said: "The United head scout called me, he was like: 'Berbs, we are looking at this kid Martial and wanted to ask what you think.'

"I told him this boy is unbelievable, the things he can do. He can be a great player, he just needs someone to guide him on the pitch.

"Of course, I'm still waiting for my commission!"

Berbatov has been supportive of Martial with his comments in the media this season. After the France international returned from injury in October to score against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League, Berbatov spoke about the importance of Martial's confidence.

"In the case of Martial, to get going again and get a goal will give him even more confidence, especially for a striker," said the ex United No.9.

"But like any other player, the most important thing now is to stay fit, know when to push hard and slowdown in training because when you have so many games you need to know when to save your energy. The last thing he and the club needs is to pick up another injury."
