Dimitar Berbatov responds to Manchester United's approach for Mauricio Pochettino

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has said that it is 'hard to blame' his old club for contacting Mauricio Pochettino over the manager's job at Old Trafford.

We reported today that the club's hierarchy are rapidly losing patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and have reached out to Pochettino's representatives over a potential deal to replace the Norwegian.

The former Spurs boss is said to be keen on the move after revealing on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football  that he is ready for a return to management.

Although Berbatov believes United are justified in their pursuit of the Argentine given their poor start to the season, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to get the best out of his key players, something all of the club's managers since Sir Alex Ferguson have struggled to do in some capacity.

Manchester United writers discuss Solskjaer's future and Pochettino

He told Betfair : "If there's truth to the Mauricio Pochettino rumours, it's hard to blame United really.

"When the team plays bad, the buck stops with the boss, and this has always been true.

"I saw him recently as a guest commentator, and he said he is ready to work again, so it's hard to stop those rumours. The one thing that won't change, however, are the players. A new boss won't change how they play.

"Yes, when you have a new manager you can see a bounce, but overall the attitude remains the same. No aggression, no passion, no holding each other to account.

"The players need to change their attitude as much as the manager needs to be changed."

United travel to Merseyside to face Everton on Saturday, with Solskjaer under pressure to achieve a positive result.

The Toffees started brilliantly but have lost their last two Premier League games and the Red Devils will be looking to take advantage of their poor recent form.

Berbatov continued, branding the fixture a 'must win' if Solskjaer wants to have any chance of keeping his job.

"Everton on Saturday now is a huge game for United, and I think if they lose this, it's probably the point where they look for a new manager," he said.

"They are 15th in the table, could be lower depending on other results if they lose Saturday, and that isn't acceptable for a club like United. It's a must win for United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer."
