Dimitar Berbatov remembers Leeds United trip with Manchester United in 2011

Dimitar Berbatov mentioned Leeds United over the weekend, or more specifically the time he played centre-back at Elland Road.

The retired Bulgarian international, whose career peaked with two Premier League trophies at Manchester United, was answering followers’ questions on Instagram.

He was asked about the night he visited West Yorkshire with the Red Devils in the EFL Cup on September 20, 2011.

It’s a major date in the calendars for that lot over the Pennines because it was the night Paul Pogba made his debut.

Sadly for the Whites it was an especially miserable evening as they limped through a 3-0 home defeat.

Michael Owen scored twice and Ryan Giggs once, all before half-time.

Sir Alex Ferguson had made all three of his substitutions by the 77th minute, but saw Zeki Fryers limp off with an injury before the match finished.

That left Michael Carrick, a midfielder, with Berbatov, a striker, at the heart of defence.

"First of all it was not five minutes, it was like half an hour maybe,” said Berbatov.

"Of course I remember it, but not many people remember which game it was. I was like [Franco] Baresi, [Paolo] Maldini and [Franz] Beckenbauer in one.”

How modest, given it was Mikael Forssell he was marking.
