Dimitar Berbatov refuses to rule out Man Utd in 'five or six horse race' for the title

Manchester United fans should expect a positive 2022 under Ralf Rangnick - and could yet win the Premier League title.

That’s the view of former Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov, who believes his old side have picked up momentum at the perfect time.

Rangnick was named as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s successor at the end of November, with the German set to be in the dugout until at least the end of the season.

In four Premier League matches in charge United have picked up 10 points from a possible 12, to keep them in touch with Arsenal in the final Champions League spot.

After 18 games United find themselves in sixth position, four points behind the Gunners having played one game fewer.

But while their top-four hopes remain, their aspirations of winning the title look all but over, trailing league leaders Manchester City by 19 points.

City are eight points clear of their nearest rivals Chelsea with all signs pointing to another title procession for Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side.

However, two-time Premier League winner Berbatov thinks United could still get in the mix under Rangnick’s tutelage.

“I don't want it to be just a three horse race, although it's now looking more like a two horse race, I want to see five or six teams push each other to make it more interesting for everyone following the Premier League,” he told Betfair.

“Man United have a great chance to build momentum and get on a good run, they could be back in the mix under Ralf Rangnick. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

“Everyone can beat anyone in the Premier League, it's still an open race and there are a lot of teams that can still get in the mix if they go on a good run.

“Without a doubt though, Man City are the team to beat and at the minute and it looks as though Liverpool are in the driving seat if Guardiola's team is to be overtaken.”

As for their prospects for the upcoming year, the Bulgarian is keen to just see a level of consistency after another turbulent 12 months for English football’s most successful club.

Berbatov added: “I want to see stable management and consistency in producing good results, especially at the moment, momentum going into the second half of the season is so important.

“If they continue on a good run and they do okay on the pitch and have that consistency and winning factor then it will give the dressing room and the management a real belief.

“Things will start to flow and everyone's hopes are high for Rangnick. His job isn't easy and he has a lot of work to do but I just want him to bring some stability to United in the way that the team will play, attacking football, young players given chances and sticking to a system that makes the team better.

“If they get that right, 2022 could be very promising for Man United.”
