Dimitar Berbatov raises concern over Ralf Rangnick as Manchester United interim boss

Dimitar Berbatov has expressed his concerns about the interim appointment of Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United, with the former striker citing his lack of experience managing truly big clubs.

The 63-year-old has agreed to take over at Old Trafford on a six-month contract as interim boss before taking a consultancy role on a two-year period.

It comes after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the dismal run of form of five defeats in seven Premier League matches, which came to a head when Watford ran out 4-1 winners against United last Saturday.

Rangnick will leave his role at Lokomotiv Moscow and take temporary charge of the Reds, replacing Michael Carrick — who won his opening game over Villarreal on Tuesday.

Work permit issues will see Carrick take charge of this Sunday's clash against Chelsea as caretaker boss.

Rangnick lauded as one of the founding members of the 'Gegenpress' and helped revolutionise TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig in their rise to prominence in the Bundesliga.

Although his managerial record is modest in terms of accolades, he took his charge of his first managerial match in 1983 for his hometown club FC Viktoria Backnang before stints with Schalke, VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96.

However, Berbatov has reservations over the credibility of the German coach at a club of United's magnitude.

He told Betfair : "He's highly respected in the football world, however with all due respect, he has managed teams like Schalke, Stuttgart and Leipzig, but he has never managed really big teams. United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so this is going to be something new to him. It's going to be interesting to see how he will cope with that situation."

However, the Bulgarian did praise the Rangnick did to establish teams in Germany, adding: "I played against Rangnick’s teams when I was at Bayer Leverkusen. He has since built great teams like Leipzig and he was very strict with discipline, knew how to build a team and was highly dependable.

"I read somewhere that he is a huge believer in the concept of the three Cs - concept, competence and capital. Implementing a concept and continuing the specific DNA of a club is the first priority. The DNA of United has always been attacking football, so I'm pretty certain he will want to keep that ethos.

"Second is competence — to know what you're doing and to find the best possible people for each position.

"The third, and this is very important, is cash. To build the first two you need money and this is not a problem at United, so he should do well."
