Dimitar Berbatov offers stark Manchester United assessment in Liverpool FC comparison

Former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov has issued a reality check message to his old side after their indifferent start to the 2020/21 season.

United escaped Brighton with all three points at the weekend thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win which came on the back of a humbling 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace to start their Premier League campaign earlier this month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's men made strides last season by finishing third in the league but Berbatov insists such an achievement should not be celebrated in light of the Reds' dominant history in the competition.

Instead, Berbatov, who was promoting his new book 'My Way' in an interview with talkSPORT this morning, offered a strong view on the gap between United and reigning league champions Liverpool.

Asked if United are making progress under Solskjaer, Berbatov sighed and said: "Probably small steps which sounds really ironic, funny, sarcastic if you want because not long ago United were always considered the team who were going to be at the top.

"Now it's a bit like, 'can we qualify for the top four?' This is now considered a success and it shouldn't be like this.

"But now times are different and Liverpool is the team that is dictating the tempo in the Premier League and in Europe as well.

"If United want to develop and get better they need to try and catch up to Liverpool because at the moment they are producing the best football."
