Dimitar Berbatov names Manchester United great as his toughest opponent

Dimitar Berbatov has named his former Manchester United teammate Nemanja Vidic as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

The two players became teammates in 2008 when Berbatov arrived at Old Trafford in a £34.2million move and they went on to enjoy great success together.

However, before they were colleagues they were on opposing sides as Berbatov established himself in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bulgarian has faced a long-list of quality defenders in his time but none were as tough as the burly Serbian.

"I always say one name, first I played against him and then with him and it was Vidic," Berbatov told talkSPORT when asked who his toughest opponent was during his career.

Vidic and Berbatov went on to win two Premier League titles together but the Champions League would always evade the striker.

United finished runners-up to Barcelona in 2009 and when they did so again two years later Berbatov was left out of the squad for the final in favour of Michael Owen, which was hard to take for the former No.9.

Recalling the moment Sir Alex Ferguson broke the news to him, he said: "It was just before the game, he called me and said 'Berbs, it’s killing me, but I need to leave you out'.

"So it was like that and it was painful to hear that because I was a goalscorer of the team and of the Premier League. ‘

"I was surprised because I felt so confident if I can shoot from somewhere, it’s going to go in. So that was a surprise for me, but in the end it was like that."
