Dimitar Berbatov makes Man Utd title claim after summer transfer business

Dimitar Berbatov believes Manchester United are in a "strong position" to compete for the Premier League title this season after their summer transfer business.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already signed Jadon Sancho in a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund, while Raphael Varane’s announcement ahead of his £45million deal from Real Madrid is imminent.

Premier League champions Manchester City have also strengthened their own squad ahead of the new season as they look to defend their crown, by bringing in Jack Grealish for a British record fee of £100million.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Chelsea are also expected to contend for the title in the upcoming campaign.

Former Manchester United striker Berbatov thinks his former club will also compete with their rivals for the Premier League this season.

“Man United are in a strong position to challenge for the title, especially after the signings they’ve made this summer,” he told Betfair.

“I am very happy that they are bringing in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. He is a World Cup and Champions League winner, he has a winning mentality and he has played with the best over the years.

“So, he is a great signing and I am looking forward to seeing how he is going to settle into the team and compliment Harry Maguire.

“Jadon Sancho is already good friends with the England players in United’s squad, which is a great thing to have when you go into a new team. Hopefully, this is going to help him settle quickly.

Will Man Utd win the Premier League this season? Let us know in the comments section.

“We already know about his quality, but there’s still plenty of room for him to grow and hopefully at United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, he can fulfil his potential.

“I’m sure he is also going to push the other forwards to perform better too. That tends to happen when you have a player of great quality next to you, you lift your game.

“The United team is in a good place. They have spent quite a lot of money already and I can’t see them spending anymore.

“They could possibly look to strengthen in the right back position. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is definitely first choice but I would like to see him have a solid back up who will challenge and push him. Other than that, I think they are pretty complete as a team.”

Berbatov is currently the assistant coach at Bulgarian club Etar, who compete in the second tier after being relegated last season.

The 40-year-old retired from professional football in 2018 after a brief spell at Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League.

Berbatov began his playing career at Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia, before moving to Bayer Leverkusen – where he made 154 appearances, scoring 69 goals.

The Bulgarian then spent two seasons at Tottenham, before moving to United and then Fulham, until he left English football for good in 2014 to join Monaco.

Berbatov remains the joint all-time leading scorer for his country with 48 goals in 78 caps.
