Dimitar Berbatov has stark message for Tottenham amid January transfer window

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov says there are big problems that need to be attended to at his old club this month.

Spurs currently sit sixth in the Premier League, six points behind London rivals Chelsea in the battle to finish in the top four after a 1-0 defeat against Southampton at St Mary's on New Year's Day.

In addition, Jose Mourinho has a number of injury problems, with Harry Kane set for a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring tear, while Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko are both currently sidelined, along with defender Danny Rose and long-term absentees Ben Davies and Hugo Lloris.

As such, Tottenham are being linked with plenty of different players in the January transfer window to add strength to the squad.

What to expect from Tottenham in the January transfer window

But Berbatov said he is intrigued to see what his old club do this month to try and overcome their current issues.

"Under [Jose] Mourinho so far, Tottenham have produced some good games, and some bad ones as well, but it is still early, and the manager needs time to implement his ideas," Berbatov said, speaking to Betfair.

"Now that the transfer window is open there are questions about what they will do, especially with some of the injuries they have.

"It was another blow to hear that Moussa Sissoko will be out for a while, he's been great for Spurs and with [Harry] Kane, [Tanguy] Ndombele and [Hugo] Lloris also injured, they have some big problems that they need to attend to.

"How are they going to fix things - the transfer window is open, are they going to buy someone or are they going to continue with the squad they have? I'm curious to see what happens, but if there is someone out there in the market who can fill the gaps they should go for it, definitely.
