Dimitar Berbatov explains why Philippe Coutinho should join Arsenal instead of Tottenham

Dimitar Berbatov believes that Philippe Coutinho would be a better fit for Arsenal than his old side Tottenham Hotspur.

The 28-year-old has been linked with both north London clubs as his time at Barcelona, after a loan at Bayern Munich, comes to an end.

A season-long loan from the Catalan side, worth £27million including a fee and wages, has been mooted.

The Brazil international signed for Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 in a £142million deal.

Berbatov believes the red of the Gunners will suit Coutinho better than the white of his old club down Seven Sisters Road.

"I have heard the rumours about Philippe Coutinho, and I thought he might be a better player for Arsenal, as Spurs play very direct," the Bulgarian told Betfair.

"The last thing you want as a midfielder is to see the ball go straight from defence to attack and back, so all you get is neck pain! You're never part of the game that way."

Berbatov was asked what changes he felt Jose Mourinho needs to make to turn Tottenham into challengers next season.

"They definitely need a defender to replace Jan Vertonghen," he said. "The midfield is up in the air, who is staying and who is going?

"Mourinho will always want a strong defence, and I imagine he will have a few names already."
