Dimitar Berbatov has urged Manchester United to do all they can to keep hold of Edinson Cavani but explained why the striker is in a "difficult situation" at Old Trafford.
Cavani was on form again on Thursday, scoring twice in United's thumping 6-2 win over Roma in the Europa League.
It was the Uruguayan's first start in three matches and once again underlined his importance to the club, who drew a blank in their last outing with Leeds when Cavani was only given five minutes off the subs' bench.
Speculation is already clouding Cavani's future, with his contract at United due up in the summer while he ponders a move back to South America where he would be sure to see more regular action.
And Berbatov feels it would be a real loss for United to see a player of Cavani's ilk depart.
Speaking to Betfair , the former United star said: "Edinson Cavani once again proved his quality for United, he's the guys who brings the goals, knows how to use the space, no selfishness whatsoever, one touch when he needs to play one touch, in the box he is a killer and he knows exactly where to position himself.
"Against Roma was another great example of all his quality, he's 34 but who cares when he can play like that.
"If he can continue like that and help the young players around him then United should be doing all they can to keep him.
"He's a class act and I'm so happy to see that everything is going well for him, it doesn't matter what your age is, quality will always be there."
Boca Juniors look to be the prime candidates to sign Cavani if he opts to quit United after just one season, having found life in England away from his family difficult during the coronavirus pandemic.
Discussing the veteran's next move, Berbatov understood the predicament Cavani was facing.
"Now it's a difficult situation, Cavani knows he is 34 and from time-to-time he will need to recharge his body, if he is happy with being rotated then I think he will stay.
"If he has other plans for a different chapter in his career then he will say 'thank you Manchester United, I've done my part and now I need to move on,' and nobody can blame him for that because he has done his job perfect whilst he has been at the club."
