Dillian Whyte to take on Alexander Povetkin behind closed doors when boxing returns

Dillian Whyte will take on Alexander Povetkin behind closed doors this summer.

The heavyweight rivals were due to clash tomorrow night in Manchester before the coronavirus crisis forced boxing to be suspended.

The clash was rescheduled for July 4 at the same venue but is now likely to be further delayed and held without a crowd.

Promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports: "I can tell you that Whyte vs Povetkin is one of the fights we are planning to stage in the early part of the return.

"It will take place behind closed doors, I don't know how we're going to do it but we'll do it.

"We have to come back with a bang and Whyte against Povetkin is a fight, along with Katie Taylor against Amanda Serrano, that we will see at the end of July or early August."

Hearn also confirmed Anthony Joshua could take on Tyson Fury later this year if Kubrat Pulev and Deontay Wilder can be convinced to step aside.

Joshua is due to take on Pulev next month but the word title clash has been postponed indefinitely while Fury is contracted to take on Wilder for a third time later this year.

But Hearn revealed several countries are interested in hosting Fury vs Joshua.

"We have had enquiries from territories asking to stage that fight,” he added. Ourselves and Fury’s MTK Global have been in discussions to look at those offers and when this fight might take place.

"As it stands now Joshua’s next fight is Pulev and Fury’s next fight is Wilder. Could a deal be struck for them to step aside? Absolutely.

"There is keenness from our side and Fury’s side to go straight into it. But we are both under contract for different fights.

"No negotiations have taken place. Negotiations can’t take place until we know if Wilder will step aside and if Pulev will step aside.”
