Dillian Whyte's epic 40-hour drive to continue training for Alexander Povetkin fight

Dillian Whyte drove 40 hours from London to Portugal to continue training for a fight which is set to be postponed.

The heavyweight is scheduled to face Alexander Povetkin in Manchester on May 2.

But with boxing in Britain cancelled until at least the end of next month due to the coronavirus crisis, Whyte will likely be forced to put his return to the ring on hold.

Promoter Eddie Hearn will make a decision this week about whether the fight will go ahead, and Whyte said: "I'm in training camp in Portugal.

"I had to drive 40 hours non-stop from my house straight here. I brought the dogs with me so I didn't want to fly.

"It's quiet but there's food on the shelves and I have a good set-up; we thought about it and planned so it's all good.

"My date's not cancelled, it's still going ahead so I'm still training and being professional.

"I'm remaining strong and it's important to show people, as well as yourself, that you're getting on with life as much as possible.

"You've got to think of the long-term goal of becoming a better fighter."
Whyte is the odds-on favourite to beat Povetkin but the Russian has only lost to Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua.

And Whyte insists he will not be taking the 40-year-old lightly.

"I should be in prime physical condition, and I need to be, he has only lost to two reigning world champions.

"He's technically good and awkward; I have to put in the time and come in shape."
