Dillian Whyte fears his mum is risking her life on coronavirus frontline

Dillian Whyte fears his mum is risking her life on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis but knows better than to ask her to down tools.

Whyte was two when his mum, Jane, left Jamaica for London to start a better life for her family.

He joined her a decade later and has since established himself as one of the best heavyweights in the world.

And while Whyte, now 32, is hunkered down at his training camp in Portugal, the matriarch of his family is fighting the virus as an NHS nurse.

"My mum has been working for the NHS for a long time; ideally I'd like her to stop working but she likes doing it, it keeps her sane and busy," Whyte told Mirror Fighting .

"My mum's the boss, she does what she wants and doesn't listen to anyone. She understands that older people need certain care, she believes if you do good then good will come to you and if it doesn't it will come to your children.

"She's a caring person, she enjoys going out and helping people and checking on people's aftercare.

"I am proud of her but I'm also worried. She's old and she's around a lot of the things that are going on, it's a worrying time.

"She's risking her life and my younger siblings' lives but there are lots of families around the world doing the same thing.

"Even if it's someone helping older people in the community with their shopping, I'm proud of everyone helping out during these difficult times."

Whyte is one of 16 celebrities taking part in a FIFA tournament to raise up to £100million for NHS charities.

He will be joined by John Terry, Ben Stokes and Justin Rose as the public choose who to represent them in the popular computer game.

"We are in strange times so it's good to do things like this and to keep a connection," he added.

"It's for a good cause, to help people and to lift their morale - and hopefully make some people laugh."
