Dilip Vengsarkar will represent MCA in BCCI: MCA AGM

MUMBAI: Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar will represent the Mumbai Cricket Association in all the BCCI meetings till the next AGM, it was decided at the cricket body's 85th Annual General Meeting, which took place at the Garware Club on Saturday.

Vengsarkar, who played 116 Tests and was a national chief selector too, has been the vice-president of the MCA in the past.

For the first time in the history of the MCA, its AGM was held without its top office-bearers - president, both the secretaries and the Vice-president, after the Apex Council had postponed the meeting on Monday. However, following an initiative by former MCA president Ravi Savant and Ravi Mandrekar, the AGM was held as per schedule. 84 authorised signatory MCA members attended the meeting, including former India women's team captain Diana Edulji and ex-India opener Lalchand Rajput.

Amongst the other key decisions taken at the AGM was that the MCA's Cricket Improvement Committee, which is led by former India batsman Jatin Paranjape and includes ex-India players Vinod Kambli and Nilesh Kulkarni, was 'disbanded' even as all the selectors and coaches of various age group teams were retained. A new Ombudsman, Dilip Bhosale, retired Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, will be appointed as the Ombudsman in place of Justice Vijaya Tahiliramani.

Milind Narvekar will continue as MCA's Governing Council chairman, while Nilesh Bhosle was named as the new member in the GC. The passing of accounts of the last three years' accounts was deferred to the next AGM. It was proposed by Shripad Halbe, who chaired the AGM, that a forensic audit of the accounts should be conducted. New auditors were appointed for the 2022-23 financial year. "This is a legally valid AGM," Halbe told TOI.

"We called today's meeting as there are certain issues which are only discussed by the general body," Ravi Savant said.

However, a top office-bearer claimed that he was "unaware" about the meeting. "We have not heard about any meeting or something. The MCA's AGM has already been deferred by the Apex Council unanimously. The new date of the AGM will be intimated to the members shortly," MCA secretary Sanjay Naik told this paper.
