Digital Opal card trial for NSW commuters

The NSW Opal transport card system is going digital. (AAP)

Thousands of NSW commuters will soon be able to tap on and off with their phones using a digital Opal card.

The NSW government is trialling a new technology which will allow travellers to add an Opal card to their digital wallets, alongside bank and membership cards.

"We have seen the increased popularity of using a digital wallet to conduct shopping and access membership cards, so we're delighted to be taking Opal digitally for the first time while providing the same Opal card benefits to adult customers," a Transport for NSW spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.

The government says the move will deliver accessibility and increased choice.

Commuters can register to test the new system on the Transport for NSW website. Up to 10,000 will be selected for the year-long trial.

Commonwealth Bank, MasterCard and EML Payments Limited are working on the trial.
