Digital bank Starling has recruited 100 staff at its new Cardiff hub since March with more to come

Digital bank Starling has recruited more than 100 staff at its new hub in Cardiff since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bank said its new operation in the city was on track to eventually employ 400 staff.

It officially launched its new data science, fraud and customer service hub in the city in March.

The hub is supporting the growth of its business and personal banking platforms. It currently has 1.3 million accounts.

Starling, founded by its Swansea-born chief executive Anne Boden in 2014, has taken 14,000 sq ft of office space at Brunel House in the centre of Cardiff.

Since its official launch it has recruited more than 100 additional staff taking the total head count to 200. Starling said its Cardiff hub remains on track to eventually double in size again to around 400.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Starling remains on track with plans for our Cardiff office. As a company, we’ve continued to hire throughout lockdown, and this includes taking on more than 100 new employees based in the Cardiff office since March.

“The office is currently open in line with government advice on Covid-19, and with a limited number of staff going in. If restrictions continue to ease, we’re looking forward to welcoming more new people in Cardiff.”

Starling assessed  a number of locations across the UK, before deciding to locate its new hub in Cardiff.

The investment in the city, in a further boost to the growing fintech sector across the Cardiff Capital Region, has not received any Welsh Government support.

Starling has also provided lending figures in Wales under the UK Government's Bounce Back Loan scheme, which is administered by its economic development bank the British Business.

The loan scheme, one of a number launched by the UK Treasury to support firms hit by the economic fallout from the pandemic, provides low interest bearing loans to small firms up to £50,000.

Starling, as an accredited lender under the Bounce Bank Loan Scheme, said it has provided £20.1m in funding to 877 firms in Wales.

Starling also has a workforce of nearly 900 in London and Southampton and has twice won Best British Bank in the British Bank Awards.
