Diggers move in to start work on The Strand in Liverpool City Centre

Diggers have today moved in to the middle of one of Liverpool City Centre's busiest and most important roads.

Contractors have set up shop in a central reservation on The Strand in front of Liverpool's famous Three Graces.

The work is part of plans to improve the thoroughfare - and make the city centre more green.

The project is part of the European Union-funded GreenUP project - aimed at bringing more nature into city centres in a bid to help tackle the growing climate change crisis.

But it is tying in with much larger work set to be carried out by the city council to improve and fundamentally change the way The Strand operates.

This initial work will see 14 trees planted in the middle of The Strand - but the council's overall work will see this number expand to 150.

In 2018 the city council unveiled its major plans to reconfigure The Strand as part of its major city centre connectivity scheme - which plans to improve congestion issues.

The initial plan suggested that The Strand should be cut to just two lanes in each direction turned into a “tree-lined highway".

It's safe to say that idea received a pretty hostile reaction and the plan was revised to include a third northbound lane.

Meanwhile some junctions on The Strand will be taken out, helping traffic to flow more freely and stop less often.

The £24m plan is due to get going in May- with more information on the plans expected soon.
