"Different philosophy, different style of play": Callum Wilson on what to expect from Eddie Howe

Callum Wilson did not need reminding about settling an old score this weekend against Brentford.

The Magpies were supposed to book their first League Cup semi-final place since 1976 when they clashed with the Bees 11 months ago but were beaten 1-0 on an awful night in the capital.

That night then head coach Steve Bruce found himself under increased pressure from supporters after blowing a big chance of reaching the latter stages of one of the domestic cups.

But with Eddie Howe now in place and Brentford arriving on Tyneside as a Premier League club, Wilson hopes things can be very different.

Wilson told Chronicle Live: "The manager has come in and he's had a week.

"We had no game and he's got work into us, this week has been more about the game.

"Everybody is going to be excited for it players, staff and supporters - everybody around the town.

"Ultimately games have passed us by but we need a result now and this is a great opportunity.

"It's the manager's first game and the home fans are right behind us.

"We have worked in the international break and we have a new style of play, a new direction.

"It's going to be a good day and I think it can be a positive one.

"If you do what is required of you on a match day then it will lead to a positive result."

When asked if revenge over Brentford can be channelled in a positive way this Saturday, Wilson reflected: "Of course.

"I played in that game, the cup game.

"The manager rotated a lot of the squad that evening to give players an opportunity.

"It was a League Cup quarter-final and we had numerous chances to win it.

"Last season we had a bit more quality as the Premier League side.

"Now they have added to their squad and it's going to be a bit more of an even game.

"We have a new manager, different philosophy and a different style of play.

"We just need to implement that on the day and hopefully we can get the three points that are much needed."
