Difference between men and women in cost of living crisis

The cost-of-living crisis continues to grow and 90% of women say they are worried about how they are going to pay their bills and how they will feed their family. Research by Nous.co found that in most households, men take control of the finances (71% compared to 49% of women), and more than a quarter of women (26%) don’t know what their monthly energy bills are, compared to 21% of men. However, women are savvier when it comes to other finances including mortgage and rent, TV, insurance, water, and car fuel.

Women also seem to be planning more cutbacks than men, with 71% of women saying they will eat out less, compared to 52% of men. Almost three quarters (74%) will be having fewer takeaways, compared to 56% of men, 70% will be buying fewer clothes compared to 47% and 44% will be switching to a cheaper supermarket compared to 35%.

When it comes to earning more to pay for the cost of living, 34% of men have asked their boss for a pay rise and 12% said they got one, while only 19% of women asked their boss and less than one in 10 (9%) got a pay rise.

Yet women feel more comfortable to ask their loved ones, with more than one in five (21%) saying they will ask their family for financial help compared to 16% of men.
