Dietmar Hamann questions Kai Havertz transfer to Liverpool this summer

Dietmar Hamann has questioned whether Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz would improve Liverpool this summer due to the way Jurgen Klopp’s side set-up.

The 20-year-old is widely regarded to be one of the most exciting young players in European football and has attracted a wealth of transfer interest.

Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked, while Bayern Munich are believed to be leading the chase for the youngster.

Havertz is often used as an attacking midfielder, a role which Klopp doesn't utilise in Liverpool's 4-3-3 system, and Hamann believes because of that, the German international may not improve the Reds like he would other sides in Europe.

“He is just a versatile player, if you watch him play he is technically very good and gifted. He has this air of arrogance about him in a nice way, not a cocky way," the former Reds midfielder told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

“He said in an interview with us a couple of weeks ago that we will find a solution in the summer.

“Bayern Munich I think would be keen, but Bayern Munich is saying we don’t really know what is happening with transfer fees and the market.

“I think they will be cautious but the top teams in Spain will be interested in him and I am sure there is a lot of Premier League clubs that will be interested.

“I think he is a terrific player and not many better ones about at the moment."

Before Hamman continued: “If you look at Man United it is very clear that they need especially going forward and I think he would improve pretty much every team.

Liverpool is a bit different because of the way they set-up and the way they play.

“But I think apart from Liverpool he probably improves any team, before the break people were talking about three figures.

“Whether this is a price any club is prepared to pay I am not too sure.

“The likelihood is very strong that he is going to leave Leverkusen and pick up another challenge in the summer.”

Liverpool are another side who have been tentatively linked with a possible swoop for Havertz.

Klopp is a huge admirer of him - although Liverpool believe the player is not worth the significant sum Leverkusen would be expected to ask for him.
