Across the internet, you may have seen servers sharing their methods to seek revenge on customers secretly.
Whether it’s requesting water for the entire table or not leaving a tip, these are a few examples of what led servers to express their frustration. This server shares how she revokes ‘ice privileges’ from customers who continuously polish off their beverages but she may be unknowingly giving them what they want.
In a clip with over 211,000 views, server Hannah Valles (@hannah_.valles) shares, “POV: my table keeps chugging their drink, so they are losing ice privileges.”
As she stands in front of the soda fountain, she scoops a cup of ice with a metallic scooper. Instead of dumping the entire thing, she only adds about three ice cubes before returning the tool. Then, the content creator places the cup under the dispenser and tops it off with Coke Zero.
Viewers are divided about servers doing this
Many servers defended Valles, where this sneaky method for dealing with chuggers is common among servers.
“Tell that to my coworkers all the time and they look at me like I’m crazy smh,” one viewer commented.
“Like the meal isn’t even out and you’ve harassed me for another dr pepper 5 times,” a second remarked.
Even a third already plots their payback on Diet Coke fans. “Diet Coke drinkers automatically start with 3 ice cubes. I’m sick of them.”
As previously reported by The Mary Sue, another server, Cammy Lý, went viral for using this trick. When her customers constantly down their drinks and demand refills, the next drink she serves will have “one less ice cube.”
However, other fellow drink chuggers didn’t see this act of retribution as punishment. In fact, they believed it was a win.
“As a drink chugger, this is exactly what we want,” one commenter stated.
Another echoed, “As a drink chugger, this is what I want. [Heck], bring it out with no ice at all.”
How can the amount of ice in a drink backfire?
Ultimately, it depends on the customers, where some may prefer more and others less. For those who prefer the latter, Valles and other servers’ revenge tactic can be seen as a victory since ice can dilute the beverage. When carbonated drinks come into contact with ice, the CO2 (carbon dioxide) reacts to form bubbles, according to Vine Pair. As a result, the bubbles dissolve and the drink loses its flavor. However, fizzy drinks aren’t the only ones. If you’ve ever ordered alcohol, this is the reason why bartenders add more ice to the booze. The ice absorbs the heat, making the drink colder and slowing the dilution, per MatchStaff. The same goes for cold coffee, where the melted ice causes the beverage to become more watery.
In addition to impacting the drink, the lack or excess amount of ice can hurt a server’s tip. Since customers base their tips on their satisfaction, they may leave a smaller tip if they’re unhappy with their drink.
