Diesel price spikes as gap between supermarket and non-supermarket fuel retailers widens

  • The cost of filling a typical family car with diesel has exceeded £100 for the first time in over three years, with average prices reaching 182.8p per litre.
  • Diesel prices have increased by 40p per litre since the Middle East conflict began on 28 February, while petrol has risen by 20p to an average of 152.8p per litre.
  • Oil prices, which significantly influence wholesale fuel costs, have soared in response to Iran's control over tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Motorists have paid an additional £544 million for fuel due to these price rises, with the RAC Foundation estimating this could reach £1 billion within weeks.
  • The price gap between supermarket and non-supermarket fuel retailers has widened, and all UK forecourts are now required to report price changes to the government's Fuel Finder database.
