Diego Simeone warns Moussa Dembele he must make Atletico chance count as Celtic hero struggles in the shadows

Former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele's torrid season is continuing at Atletico Madrid as boss Diego Simeone fires a warning to the underperforming frontman.

The French forward notched just one goal at parent club Lyon before signing for the La Liga leaders in the January window on loan.

He's yet to make a start under club legend Simeone with just four substitute appearances and is still yet to find the net at his new side, missing a massive chance in his last outing in a goalless draw at Getafe.

And the Argentine boss said: "I always say that the number of minutes is not important. What matters is the quality of these minutes.

"I hope that Dembele can bring us what we hoped for when he arrived in the team."

Dembele's introduction to the squad was hampered by a hand injury before he then tested positive for Covid-19 in an outbreak at the club.

And his opportunities off the bench are often limited by Simeone's tendency to bring on defensive substitutes instead of an extra striker in the second half of games, as they hope to cling onto a four-point lead over nearest challengers Barcelona at the top.

Uruguayan veteran Luis Suarez is the first choice striker and the manager prefers to partner him with either Angel Correa or Joao Felix.

Celtic will be watching on as they retain a 10 per cent sell on fee in a player Atleti can buy for £32.5m in the summer.
