Diego Simeone gives update on Alvaro Morata future amid Manchester United transfer speculation

Diego Simeone hopes that Alvaro Morata will stay at Atletico Madrid beyond the summer transfer window.

Manchester United want to strengthen their attacking options, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial are the only recognised centre-forwards at the club. Morata has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and he has Premier League experience.

Morata played for Chelsea for three years between 2017 and 2020 and he scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for the London club. The centre-forward signed for Atletico Madrid after his spell with Chelsea, but he spent last season on loan with Juventus.

Morata has returned to Atletico Madrid for the new campaign and he seems to be in Simeone's plans, despite links away from the Spanish capital. Morata started in Atletico's opening La Liga game on Monday and he scored two goals against Getafe.

There has been speculation about the 29-year-old's future and Simeone was asked about such reports this week.

“I am not the owner of the club, I am the coach. Everyone at the club hopes he [Morata] continues," Simeone said on Monday night. "He is working very well, in an extraordinary way. I think that all footballers need to have confidence to do important things.

"He came back with great humility and wanting to work. He came back trying hard.”

Morata is contracted with Atletico until the summer of 2024.
