Diego Simeone gives latest on Kieran Trippier future amid Newcastle United & Chelsea interest

Diego Simeone says Kieran Trippier's future at Atletico Madrid is in his own hands after a formal bid was submitted by Newcastle United.

Sky Sports reported that the La Liga outfit will now let the England international decide his future with the Three Lions full back 'keen on a return to the Premier League'.

A statement from Diego Simeone was read out on Sky Sports news this afternoon. He said: "Kieran Trippier now has to decide if he wants to leave or not. We will move on his decision."

The former Spurs defender looks set to become the highest paid player at Newcastle if he completes his move to St James' Park, though Chelsea are also keen.

Eddie Howe looks wants to make the England international the first signing of his and the new owners' tenure as they plot Premier League survival.

The Magpies are two points adrift from safety but have been linked with a move for Trippier since the completion of the takeover last year.

Trippier is no stranger to the Newcastle head coach, having worked together during their tenure at Burnley.

It would be the first statement of intent from the Magpies new owners, bringing in a player who was named in the La Liga team of the season as Atleti won the title last year.

His fine form in Spain saw Trippier linked with a return to England with Manchester United last summer, but a move did not come to fruition.
