Diego Simeone confirms Atletico Madrid injury boost ahead of Champions League clash vs Chelsea

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has quashed fears that the Spanish giants could be without goalkeeper Jan Oblak for Wednesday evening's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash with Chelsea.

The La Liga heavyweights will travel to Stamford Bridge looking to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first-leg and knock an English side out of the competition for the second season in succession.

Frenchman Olivier Giroud netted the only goal of the game in the first leg in Bucharest last month to ensure Thomas Tuchel's side, who travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United tomorrow lunchtime, will hold an advantage ahead of Wednesday's return leg in west London.

While the Blues have enjoyed a flying start to the Tuchel era, going their first 11 games under his stewardship unbeaten, the clash with Atletico could be deemed as his toughest assignment yet because of the magnitude of the contest for both clubs.

And ahead of the midweek showdown, Atletico chief Simeone has been able to deliver some positive news on the injury front, certainly from the Spanish club's perspective, with Jan Oblak fit and available for selection for their La Liga fixture with Getafe tomorrow evening.

On Friday morning, reports suggesting that the highly-rated shot-stopper, who was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge last summer before the Blues got a deal over the line for Edouard Mendy, had suffered an injury after not participating in Atletico's team training session ahead of their trip to 15th-placed Getafe.

Oblak, who has been the La Liga outfit's first-choice goalkeeper for several years, was spotted training alone in the club's gym, opposed to with the rest of his teammates, sparking fears that he picked up an injury and could be in line for a spell on the sidelines, ruling him out of the trip to Stamford Bridge.

However, Simeone has played down those concerns, insisting he is fit and will be available for selection against Getafe, providing proof that he isn't currently a doubt for the clash with Tuchel's Chelsea.

"Yes, tomorrow he will be with the team," Simeone said, as quoted by the Metro. "We decided that he works in the gym [today], but he will be in the squad."

Chelsea, meanwhile, are sweating over the fitness of centre-back Thiago Silva and striker Tammy Abraham ahead of Wednesday night's huge European showdown after Tuchel confirmed they would both miss tomorrow's clash with Leeds.

Silva, despite making a return to the match-day squad against Everton on Monday, has played no part in the Blues' last eight matches because of a thigh injury, and has now suffered a fresh setback.

"Thiago had a little setback in training at the end of the training session the day before yesterday [Wednesday]," Tuchel explained.

"He felt at the very end something around the same area where he was injured so we had to take him off, so he is back into a transition phase but not back into team training.

Issuing an update on Abraham's ankle injury, the Blues boss added: "Tammy Abraham has still the ankle pain from the tackle against Newcastle.

"Yesterday he came off [in training], the day before he was fine, so these two are out for tomorrow and everybody else is available."
