Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid make Stamford Bridge decision ahead of Chelsea clash

Atletico Madrid have reportedly decided not to travel to London until late in the day due to concerns over coronavirus.

Chelsea face the Spanish giants on Wednesday night in a Champions League Round of 16 second leg having won 1-0 in the 'away' first leg during February.

The first leg, originally scheduled to take place in Madrid, was moved to Bucharest, Romania, after the Spanish government extended its ban over UK arrivals without any exceptions for elite sport.

The return leg will take place at Stamford Bridge, as planned, on Wednesday evening with Spain allowing UK flights with only Spanish residents and the UK allowing arrivals for elite sportspeople.

But that doesn't mean Atletico Madrid feel comfortable staying in London any longer than they need to with coronavirus rates in some areas of the capital still rising, despite large improvements in rates overall.

According to reports, Atletico Madrid will not train at Stamford Bridge today as part of the usual UEFA routine, instead opting to train in Spain.

Reports claim the La Liga table-toppers are said to have refused to train in London due to concerns over infection rates and that they want to spend as little time in the English capital as possible.

That has not been officially confirmed, but Atletico Madrid held their pre-match press conference at home in Spain as late as this lunchtime and they did indeed train at home this morning.

That would suggest they will not travel to London until much later than they usually would, though they are not likely to be impacted given the flight time is only around two hours and 20 minutes from Madrid to London.

Chelsea will be aiming to defend their one-goal lead at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to progress to the quarter-finals after Olivier Giroud scored a spectacular overhead kick in Romania.
