Diego Llorente's Euro 2020 boost as Leeds United star's latest Covid-19 test comes back negative

Diego Llorente's hopes of keeping his place in Spain's Euro 2020 have been boosted after he returned a negative Covid-19 test.

The Leeds United defender had tested positive for the virus on Tuesday evening following a positive result from Spain skipper Sergio Busquets on Sunday.

With the squad in self-isolation, Llorente's positive test appeared to be a significant blow to his chances of going to the tournament which starts on Friday evening, with Spain boss Luis Enrique calling up a 'parallel' squad of 17 players, including Llorente's Elland Road team-mate Rodrigo.

Regular tests are being carried out among the Spain squad and Llorente's latest PCR test that was carried out on Wednesday has now given a negative result, the Spanish FA have confirmed.

A further counter-analysis of the sample has been carried out and also showed no signs of the virus, giving 'serious indications' that it is a false positive.

That means Llorente will undergo another PCR test on Thursday and a further one on Friday.

Should they show a negative result, he will link up with the team again on Friday afternoon.

Spain begin their Euro 2020 tilt on Monday when they host Sweden in Seville, with Enrique permitted to call up an unlimited number of replacement players to cover for illness or injury before that opening fixture.

Should Llorente receive the all-clear, then he will make the final squad, which would be a fitting end to a season that saw him overcome a series of injury set-backs to establish himself as a vital player in Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United side this season.
