Diego Godin turned down Manchester United and stayed with Atletico Madrid for 'personal reasons'

Diego Godin has revealed that he has not signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid but elected to stay with the club for “personal reasons”.

Godin was the subject of late interest from Manchester United during the final days of the English transfer window.

United, desperate to add an experienced centre-half to their squad, sought to activate the 32-year-old’s €20m release clause last Thursday.

Godin, however, turned down the opportunity to move to Old Trafford and was said to have signed renewed terms with Atletico.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup against Real Madrid, Godin denied agreeing to a new contract but admitted to the interest in his services.

“I have not renewed,” he said. “I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons and I am only thinking about the final.

“But I have not extended my contract. I saw that news came out but I do not know where it came from.”

United ultimately failed in their attempts to sign the defender that Jose Mourinho requested, passing up on deals for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina.
