Diego Godin confirms Atletico Madrid exit and discusses failed Manchester United transfer

Legendary centre-back Diego Godin has confirmed he turned down a transfer to Manchester United last summer while announcing his departure from Atletico Madrid.

Godin has spent nine years at Atleti, after signing from Villarreal in 2010, and played a major part in making the side a real challenger - and eventual winner - in La Liga and establishing them as the third biggest club in Spain.

The Uruguayan defender played 387 times for Atleti and bagged 27 goals - the biggest of which being an equaliser against Barcelona that clinched them the title in 2014.

The 33-year-old has scored many important goals for both club and country but it was at the other end of the pitch where he made his name, becoming one of the world's best centre-backs.

It was little wonder that United, who've been chasing a new defender for what feels like multiple transfer windows now, were interested and Godin confirmed he had the chance to move to Manchester.

"I refused Manchester United's bid one year ago because I decided to stay at Atlético Madrid," Godin said while announcing his exit.

"Now - one year later - it's time to go."

Godin didn't comment on where his next club will be, though he is expected to sign a two-year deal with Serie A giants Inter.

However, he leaves Atleti with a heavy heart.

"I'm a little nervous, much more than I am before a game, but I have called everyone here to inform you that these are my final days at the club," Godin said.

"The most beautiful cycle of my sporting career and my life is over.  I'm proud to have been on this beautiful stage, part of the history of this beautiful club.

"Thanks to everyone. This is not just a club for me, it has been a family, a way of life, my home.”
