Diego Forlan reveals private Gary Neville conversation after Manchester United goals v Liverpool

Gary Neville told Diego Forlan he would be 'remembered for years' after scoring two goals for Manchester United against Liverpool.

Forland spent two-and-a-half years at United after signing from Independiente in the summer of 2002. The centre-forward won the Premier League and the FA Cup during that stint, making a total of 98 appearances, before switching to Villarreal in the summer of 2004.

However, when recently reflecting on his time spent at United, it wasn't the trophies he won that Forlan joked he would be remembered for. That's because Forlan has recalled a message from Neville after he scored a brace against Liverpool at Anfield in a 2-1 win for United in 2002.

Forlan scored twice against Liverpool back in December 2002 at Anfield and Neville explained the importance of the goals.

"This kind of derby is always competitive," Forlan said "I remember the feeling when I was playing and I still see it when I watch on TV – this is what is beautiful about football, how competitive it can be.

"Everybody wants to win these games and it will definitely be competitive. The one thing I really remember when I scored against Liverpool was after the game, when Gary [Neville] came to me and said: 'You don’t know what you’ve done; you will be remembered for this for years. That the fans still recognise this, you can see just what it means!'"
