Diego Forlan gives verdict on Edinson Cavani to Manchester United transfer

Former Manchester United and Uruguay striker Diego Forlan has backed his former international teammate Edinson Cavani to thrive at Old Trafford.

The pair, along with former Liverpool and Barcelona forward Luis Suarez, led a formidable Uruguayan side to the 2010 World Cup semi-finals. And Forlan, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson at United, believes Cavani has the right mentality to succeed at his old club.

United are closing in on a deal for free agent Cavani, who left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. The 33-year-old is a surprise addition for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who had previously identified younger targets like Jadon Sancho.

But Forlan has no worries how his friend will fare in Manchester.

“I think Cavani is going to do well,” Forlan told the National. “Edinson will show his conduct and way of doing things, his professionalism, the way he works hard and trains.

"It will be his conduct that other players can watch and learn from.”

MEN Sport understands Solskjaer is keen to add Cavani's experience to his forward line and enable the likes of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to develop. The trio all enjoyed best-ever seasons under the Norwegian in 2019/20.

And while United signed Odion Ighalo in January as a back-up option, that loan deal is set to expire in January, with Cavani now expected to provide serious competition for the No.9 role.
