Diego Carlos' strengths amid Tottenham links as Mourinho plays key role in Dier's new deal

Here's all the news from around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Phase three plans

Spurs have submitted a new planning application as the next phase of their stadium complex takes shape.

Whilst the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been open since April 2019, a number of extra parts of the overall complex need to be approved and completed.

That includes the 'Northumberland Terrace', which is the third phase of the club's plan.

Homegrown Harry Kane is the ‘special one’ for Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham

Spurs' plans will transform the space behind the High Road to the north-west of the stadium, in the area between the club's offices, Sainsbury's and the road.

The new-look area will include new commercial office space 'catering for use by the creative industry' and ground floor retail units.

It will also house a music label and recording studio.

"Significant steps have been taken to secure an anchor tenant who is a leading figure in the music industry," they said in their application.

Carlos analysed

Spurs are said to be keen on a move for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this summer.

They face competition from Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola desperate for a new centre-half.

Would Carlos make a useful addition for Jose Mourinho's side, though?

On the face of it, he's a Mourinho man through and through.

Spurs have got to improve their defence if they want to strengthen their top-four aspirations, having kept just six clean sheets this season.

Carlos' strengths lie in being no-nonsense and excellent in the air, seemingly making him perfect for Mourinho's football.

Why Mourinho made sure of Dier's new deal

Eric Dier's new four-year deal is the result of his close working relationship with Jose Mourinho.

The 26-year-old was always going to look to stay at Spurs once he began working with Mourinho, who brought a fresh take to his journey at the club.

Mourinho desperately wanted to sign Dier when he was Manchester United manager and, when he was appointed Spurs boss, the player was coming off the back of one of the worst seasons of his career after being ravaged by illness and injury.

Yet he has improved under Mourinho, with a switch to a centre-back role sowing the seeds of a renaissance.
