Didier Deschamps' warning to Arsenal fans over Matteo Guendouzi's international call-up

France manager Didier Deschamps has warned fans not to put too much expectation onto the shoulders of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

The 20-year-old was called up to the French national squad for the first time during the current international break, replacing injured Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Guendouzi was an unused substitute for the nation's European qualifier against Albania on Saturday, but could make his debut when France take on Andorra tomorrow (Tuesday).

However, speaking ahead of the match against Albania, Deschamps warned to expect too much too soon from the youngster.

"Do not ask too much, he's a young player, who is still the Espoirs generation, who plays a lot of matches with Arsenal where there is strong competition," he said, as reported by FootMercato.

"He's the modern midfielder, box to box as they say there, with a lot of power and technical quality too. He's there. What I expect from young people is that they bring this freshness, this dynamism.

"He is a very young player but with a very big potential."

Arsene Wenger not ruling out leading a team at next World Cup

Guendouzi has played all but four minutes of Arsenal's Premier League campaign this season, putting in a man of the match performance in the 2-2 draw with Spurs in the north London derby - the last match before the international break.

The midfielder provided the cross for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's equalising goal in the second half.

Should he earn his first French cap, Guendouzi will join a list of prestigious Arsenal players to have played for France including: Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit and Robert Pires.
