Didier Deschamps explains why Manchester United's Anthony Martial is not in France Euro 2020 squad

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been omitted from France's squad for the European Championship due to injury.

The 25-year-old has not played for United since March's international break but has returned to training for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's ranks this week.

Martial was not passed fit for Tuesday's Premier League clash against Fulham but could make an appearance on the final day against Wolves.

The forward will also hope to feature in next week's Europa League final against Villarreal in Gdansk, which is United's last game of the season.

However, Martial will not have the opportunity to add to his 27 France caps at this summer's international tournament having been omitted due to injury.

Speaking upon the announcement of his squad, France boss Didier Deschamps said: "Anthony Martial would have been here, but he is not available. His condition does not allow it."

The news represents a significant blow to Martial, who was on the standby list for the 2018 World Cup but did not make the final squad as Les Bleus won the tournament.

Paul Pogba is therefore the only United representative in France's squad for Euro 2020, which was originally due to take place last summer but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With Martial unavailable, France's selection of forwards for the tournament consists of Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe, Marcus Thuram, Kingsley Coman, Wissam Ben Yedder, Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Lemar, Ousmane Dembele and Karim Benzema.

Real Madrid forward Benzema is the surprise inclusion in the squad, making his return to the international set-up after a six-year absence.
