Didi Gregorius nearing Yankees return, cleared to return for baseball activity

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. _ Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius has been cleared to resume baseball activity, just five days after suffering torn cartilage in his right wrist.

And that puts Gregorius firmly in position to be in next Wednesday's lineup for the AL wild-card game against Oakland.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed the news Wednesday on ESPN's "The Michael Kay Show," after Kay first reported it on the air. Gregorius later confirmed the news himself

From the start, Gregorius has fought against the notion that he'd suffered a potentially season-ending injury last Saturday at Yankee Stadium, when he slid home with the wild-card clinching run against Baltimore on Aaron Hicks' 11th-inning double.

On Wednesday night, Adeiny Hechavarria was listed as the Yankees starting shortstop, with Neil Walker at second base.

Gleyber Torres was not in the lineup for a second straight day. The rookie infielder has been dealing again with tightness in his hip/groin area.
