Did you see the pink moon last night? Kielder Observatory has shared this stunning image

Did you catch last night's stunning Pink Moon?

April's full moon illuminated the UK skies late on Good Friday, with the surface tinted a red/orange colour.

Although the April full moon is dubbed the "pink moon", the name has nothing to do with the colour. Rather, the Pink Moon is a Native American term, as the moon coincides with the bloom of a common American pink flower.

Kielder Observatory has kindly shared an image of the Pink Moon.

Astronomer Dan Monk told ChronicleLive why the moon has an orange colour.

He said: "The colour is caused by the Earth's atmosphere, because when the moon is low on the horizon the moonlight has to get through thicker atmosphere. Every full moon throughout the year has a name, different cultures have different names. In this case the pink moon name is not a reference to its colour."
