Maybe the officials in the Kansas City Chiefs’ eventual win over the Los Angeles Chargers were in awe like the rest of us were watching Patrick Mahomes throw an unbelievable 54-yard pass to Tyreek Hill for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that led to a tie game.
But whatever was happening, they missed what could have been a crucial penalty involving Hill.
After scoring, Hill appeared to remove his helmet in the end zone. That’s a 15-yard penalty, as we saw last year when Falcons safety Keanu Neal was whistled for it when he took off his helmet post-injury.
No flags on the play, and the Chiefs scored a two-point conversion after that to tie the game, and perhaps they wouldn’t have tried one had they been much farther back.

That’s pretty obvious. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the refs thought it fell off in his tumble into the end zone?

But Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said he told officials that the helmet was removed. Via Pro Football Talk:
“The referees are human beings. They missed it. I told them that he took his helmet off. They missed that one. Those refs, they did an outstanding job. I thought they called a really good game. It was very competitive on both sides, but they missed that one.”
