The biggest decision the Pittsburgh Steelers had to make this offseason concerned the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh and Roethlisberger finally came together on a new contract to bring Roethlisberger back and save almost the maximum amount of salary cap possible.
But was it a mistake? This was the topic Peter King and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk debated. Both guys agreed that the move to keep Roethlisberger is a move the Steelers will regret.
So what would be the alternative? The Steelers could have released Roethlisberger, saved a little more against the cap and then turn their full attention of the offseason to who will start at quarterback.
Meanwhile, all the same players are going to leave in free agency and Pittsburgh will still have to replace five starters on defense. Vance McDonald and Maurkice Pouncey are still going to retire and the odds JuJu Smith-Schuster returns are far lower without Big Ben at quarterback.
I don’t think anyone is betting on the Steelers winning a Super Bowl this season. But how much regret can a team have between being competitive and winning 8-10 games and not being competitive and winning 5-8 without Big Ben?
