Did the Redskins just save themselves from an 0-16 season?

Have you taken a look at the remaining games on the Washington Redskins schedule lately? It doesn’t inspire much optimism.

After picking up their first win of the season over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Redskins may have avoided a winless season, but looking ahead, it’s tough to find another sure win on the calendar. When predicting the remaining games for Washington a couple of weeks ago, we thought the makings of a 3-13 finish were possible, but that appears to be optimistic now. There are obviously a lot of variables that go into the eventual outcome of the game, but on paper, it’s starting to look like a 1-15 season is highly possible for the Redskins. Let’s take a look at the remaining games in the regular season.

Week 7 | vs. San Francisco 49ers
Week 8 | at Minnesota Vikings
Week 9 | at Buffalo Bills
Week 10 | BYE
Week 11 | vs. New York Jets
Week 12 | vs. Detroit Lions
Week 13 | at Carolina Panthers
Week 14 | at Green Bay Packers
Week 15 | vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Week 16 | vs. New York Giants
Week 17 | at Dallas Cowboys

Can you find a win anywhere in that schedule? At the moment, it appears that games against the 49ers, Vikings, Lions, Packers, Eagles and Cowboys are almost sure losses, and the Redskins will likely be significant underdogs in all of those games. Outside of that, games that looked winnable at one point now seem to be getting tougher, with the Jets getting back QB Sam Darnold on Sunday, the Bills excelling under QB Josh Allen and coach Sean McDermott, and the Panthers finding success with backup QB Kyle Allen. That leaves the Giants, a division game between the two bottom teams in the NFC East. It’s easily the most winnable game left on the docket, but that doesn’t mean that Washington will emerge victorious. After Washington was blown out 24-3 when the teams met earlier this season, there’s little reason for confidence, especially when you include the fact that New York was without star running back Saquon Barkley in that game.

In the NFL, it’s not out of the ordinary for underdogs to upset an unsuspecting team every now and again, and the Redskins could very well do just that at some point down the road. It’s possible that they finish the season with two wins, and maybe even three, but it’s unlikely. By grabbing a victory on Sunday against the Dolphins, Washington made sure that there will be at least one week spent celebrating this season. Take it in while you can, because it might be a while before that chance comes around again.
