Justin Bieber has launched a new album titled Swag. But behind the music lies a story of money, broken trust, and a once-close partnership with his long-time manager.

Bieber and former manager Scooter Braun have reportedly settled a long-running financial dispute. The argument centred on a loan Braun made to Bieber in 2022. At the time, Bieber cancelled his global Justice tour, which left him owing $26 million (£20.5 million) to promoter AEG.

Braun stepped in and paid the debt. He was helping the pop star save face and avoid lawsuits. It was a private deal, but the details leaked over time. In addition to the loan, a PwC audit revealed Bieber owed Braun an extra $11 million. This amount covered unpaid commissions over the years. Bieber's team disputed the figure. In the end, both sides agreed on a partial payment.

Bieber repaid the $26 million in full. He also agreed to pay 50% of the disputed commissions, which brought the total settlement close to $31.5 million (£24.8 million).

A source told TMZ, 'Scooter covered for Justin when others wouldn't. But Justin cut ties and didn't want to pay. That's when things turned sour.'

An End of an Era

Bieber and Braun had a long relationship. Braun discovered the Canadian singer on YouTube when he was 13. Together they built a global brand. But in recent years, Bieber pulled away from Braun's management.

Braun stepped back from talent work in 2023. He became CEO of HYBE America, which manages major K-pop and Western acts, a role which he stepped down from recently. In a 2025 interview, Braun said, 'We achieved amazing things. But people change. So do relationships.'

There is no formal split, but the closeness is gone. Bieber's new album and business choices reflect that independence.

New Music, New Chapter

Just days after the financial settlement, Bieber dropped Swag, a surprise album. The timing raised eyebrows. Was it a rebrand? A creative comeback? Or a way to recoup losses?

Industry analysts believe the album was planned to show strength. One insider said, 'He's turning the page. The album is him saying, I'm still here—and I'm in control.'

Swag is lighter in tone than Justice. It blends R&B and synth-pop, with lyrics about freedom, growth, and betrayal. Fans have already speculated some tracks refer to his old team.

Net Worth Intact, But It Cost Him

The £24.8 million settlement did not sink Bieber. His net worth remains around £236 million ($300 million). He sold his song catalogue in 2022, which gave him financial padding.

But sources say the debt was a blow. One said, 'It didn't break him. But it forced a reality check. That kind of cash doesn't sit in one bank account.'

The payments were reportedly handled quickly. Some funds came from liquid assets. Others may have involved stock sales or postponed projects.

Still, the damage was more personal than financial. Braun had once been like family. The lawsuit, audit, and cold settlement marked a sharp departure from the past.

Who Owed Who?

Many fans thought Braun was chasing Bieber for control or royalties. In fact, Bieber owed Braun, not the other way around.

According to TMZ, Braun paid AEG directly when the Justice tour was pulled. That avoided a public legal mess. But it created a private rift when Bieber distanced himself and resisted repaying the full amount.

Braun reportedly tried to handle it quietly. But when the money didn't come, lawyers got involved.

Looking Ahead

Swag signals a fresh start for Bieber. It comes with a clear message: he's still in charge of his story. The dispute with Braun is over, but its shadow lingers.

Fans are embracing the music. But the quiet tension with Braun may follow Bieber longer than a chart cycle. The question now isn't whether he can recover. It's whether he can thrive without the man who helped build the empire.
