Did Rafa Benitez hold any fresh contract talks on Saturday? Why was John Carver back at St James'?

Rafa Benitez did not get any fresh hints on his future after Newcastle United's game with Crystal Palace.

Just 24 hours before the game Benitez had stated he was waiting for "answers" but Mike Ashley is on a family break and Keith Bishop and Justin Barnes were not in attendance.

Benitez did spend time in a scouting meeting over the weekend alongside managing director Lee Charnley, head of recruitment Steve Nickson and European scout Paul Baker were all in attendance.

One positive sign for fans waiting to see if Benitez will sign a new deal is that he has started to whittle down the list of summer targets as scouts discussed players from Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Holland and beyond.

But there was an air of uncertainty behind the scenes on Saturday and the players are as intrigued as supporters to know what is going to happen with Benitez - not least after a strong Press conference in the build-up to the game.

Benitez did not name his team until the players arrived at the stadium and told the media before the game that his selection had been based on performances in training.

Another talking point from the weekend included the return of John Carver to St James' Park.

Carver was spotted talking to Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson before the kick off in the technical area.

However, Carver was a corporate guest and was getting a pitchside picture with supporters before the match.

Carver was well received by fans and chatted to many of them during the day.

The week ahead will all be about preparation for the Leicester City game with Benitez set to meet the media on Thursday afternoon.
