Did Leo Varadkar break any rules while sunbathing in the Phoenix Park?

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar did not break the 5km rule when sunbathing in the Phoenix Park on Sunday.

The Fine Gael leader, his partner Matthew Barnett and two friends met up by the Wellington Monument in Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

Pictures emerged online of the Taoiseach and his pals with some suggesting he was breaking the very restrictions he has brought in.

However, Mr Varadkar is currently residing in Farmleigh Estate in the park with his partner Matthew during the pandemic and was not outside of the 5km limit.

The Dubliner was also in a group of four, which is allowed outdoors, and appeared to be keeping a distance between the two friends that he is not living with.

According to phase one of the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, up to four people who don’t live together can meet outdoors keeping at least two metres apart.

Additionally you can travel up within a 5km radius of your home for non-essential travel.

Varadkar confirms phase 1 of reopening Ireland announcing new coronavirus measures

A spokesperson for the Taoiseach told the Irish Independent: "The Taoiseach was in the Phoenix Park with his partner Matt and two friends on Sunday Afternoon, in line with public health guidance.”

“He was within 5km of the Stewards Lodge, where he is staying during the Covid Emergency."

It is believed the Taoiseach has to pay a nightly fee to use the house which is said to suit him better in this time of crisis.
